Apple plans to release at least one version of the iPhone 17 next year with a mechanical aperture, according to a report published today by The Information.
The mechanical system would allow users to change the size of the area of the iPhone 17, which means the opening of the camera lens through which the light enters. All existing iPhone camera lenses have fixed apertures, but some Android smartphones have offered a different aperture over the years, such as Samsung’s Galaxy S9 series.
With a mechanical system, users could create a small hole for themselves. This can allow photos to be shot with a shallow depth of field, where the subject remains in focus while the background is blurred. Apple already provides this effect on iPhones with Portrait Mode, but it is artificial, while this change can make it natural.
Portrait Mode can sometimes have problems separating objects in the foreground from the background, a problem that a built-in camera can solve.
Apple is expected to release the iPhone 17 series in September 2025, and the entry-level model will likely be limited to the high-end “iPhone 17 Ultra” model (currently called “iPhone 17 Slim”). However, as the year passes, some of Apple’s camera-related plans may change.
